1 in 6 Get Sick from Foodborne Illnesses Each Year

Among the additional findings for foodborne illness due to known pathogens:

* Salmonella was the leading cause of estimated hospitalizations and deaths, responsible for about 28 percent of deaths and 35 percent of hospitalizations due to known pathogens transmitted by food.
* About 90 percent of estimated illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths were due to seven pathogens: Salmonella, norovirus, Campylobacter, Toxoplasma, E.coli O157, Listeria and Clostridium perfringens.
* Nearly 60 percent of estimated illnesses, but a much smaller proportion of severe illness, was caused by norovirus.

Hepatitis E - Santé Humaine

Ce kit, développé par CEERAM S.A.S., permet la détection du virus de lʼhépatite E (HEV) par RT- PCR en temps réel dans tous les types dʼéchantillons de selles. Le virus de lʼhépatite E est un virus non enveloppé à ARN simple brin appartenant à la famille des Hepeviridae, genre Hepevirus. Il existe 4 génotypes numérotés de 1 à 4. La sévérité des signes cliniques augmente avec lʼâge allant de cas asymptomatiques chez les jeunes enfants (moins de 6 ans) à des cas dʼhépatites aiguës (taux de mortalité de 2%) voire fulminantes chez les femmes enceintes (taux de mortalité de 20%). La transmission par voie féco-orale est la plus habituelle. A noter quʼil existe un important réservoir animal.
Le dépistage par sérologie nʼest pas suffisamment performant pour permettre un diagnostic fiable du virus HEV. La détection par RT-PCR en temps réel, après extraction et purification de lʼARN viral, est une méthode de choix compte tenu de sa rapidité et de sa sensibilité. La limite de détection de ce kit varie de 1 à 10 copies selon la qualité des acides nucléiques extraits.

Hepatitis E - Food

Developed by CEERAM SAS, this kit allows the detection of hepatitis E virus (HEV) by real time RT- PCR in all types of food samples (shellfish, fruits, vegetables, processed foods...). Hepatitis E virus is a non-enveloped single strand RNA virus from the Hepeviridae family, genus Hepevirus and include 4 genotypes (I,2,3,4). The severity of the clinical signs increases with the going age of asymptomatic case in the young children (< 6 years old) with cases of acute (mortaliy rate of 2%) or fulminant hepatitis in pregnant women (mortaliy rate of 20%). The transmission via the fecal-oral route is the most usual. It should be noted that an important animal tank exists.
Food samples can be contaminated via food handlers or by the environment. Due to their structural properties, Hepatitis E viruses can survive to different food process. The consumption of contaminated food can lead to human outbreaks. There is no specific curative treatment but a vaccine is available.
The diagnostic by serological methods is not appropriated to detect the HEV. Detection by real time RT-PCR, after extraction and purification of the viral RNA, is a method of choice taking into account its speed and its sensitivity. The detection limit varied from 1 to 10 copies depending of the quality of the analyzed nucleic acids.

Le virus de lʼhépatite E est un virus non enveloppé à ARN simple brin appartenant à la famille des Hepeviridae, genre Hepevirus. Il existe 4 génotypes numérotés de 1 à 4. La sévérité des signes cliniques augmente avec lʼâge allant de cas asymptomatiques chez les jeunes enfants (moins de 6 ans) à des cas dʼhépatites aiguës (taux de mortalité de 2%) voire fulminantes chez les femmes enceintes (taux de mortalité de 20%). La transmission par voie féco-orale est la plus habituelle. A noter quʼil existe un important réservoir animal. Les aliments peuvent être contaminés par un manipulateur ou via lʼenvironnement. Grâce à ses propriétés structurales, le virus de lʼhépatite E peut persister à différents procédés alimentaires. La consommation dʼaliments contaminés peut conduire à des épidémies dans la population.
Le dépistage par sérologie nʼest pas suffisamment performant pour permettre un diagnostic fiable du virus HEV. La détection par RT-PCR en temps réel, après extraction et purification de lʼARN viral, est une méthode de choix compte tenu de sa rapidité et de sa sensibilité.
