BERNAMA - Only Five Per Cent Septic Tanks Nationwide Desludged - Noriah

Only five per cent of the 1.22 million septic tanks in the country have been desludge by 2010 said the Deputy Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Noriah Kasnon.

This Noriah said was a concern to the government as the failure to empty septic tanks has become one of the factors contributing to river pollution in the country as the number of polluted rivers has increased from 48 in 2008 to 54 in 2009.

"The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) has urged all users of individual septic tanks to be more concerned with pollution from sewerage which could cause the spread of water borne diseases such as hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid fever can threaten the health of the people," she said.

Therefore, she urged SPAN and Indah Water Consortium to continue organizing awareness campaign to tell the people the importance of desludging individual septic tanks at least once in three years, since it would cost only RM6 per month for three years.

She was speaking to reporters after officiating a national level Campaign to Desludge Individual Septic Tanks at Kampung Kenangan Tun Dr Ismail 2 here today.
