Mumbai: With the monsoon settling in, the water borne diseases have started hitting the city hard. OPDs in hospitals are packed with patients suffering from diseases like gastroenteritis, cholera, jaundice and hepatitis A.

Due to intake of unsafe water Cases of hepatitis A are being reported in large number in this season and the number of patients of gastroenteritis and cholera is increasing every day. Parents should ensure that children are drinking pure water." Dr Ashok Gupta a pediatrician said.

"Contaminated food and unsafe water are the two biggest reasons of diseases in this season. One should avoid eating out these days as the street food in particular can be very dangerous for the health," Dr CL Nawal professor of medicine in SMS medical college said.

Seasonal flu, cough and cold are also common in this season and ignoring these symptoms can even lead to pneumonia in certain cases. "Fever of any kind should not be taken lightly and self medication should be strictly avoided. One should consult a doctor if the fever is only due to viral infection or any other reasons, " Dr VK Goyal a city based physician said. In addition to flu, dengue fever is also likely to attack you and your family.
