Diagnostic test not available at allied hospitals

The Young Doctors Association (YDA), Punjab, has urged the concerned authorities to take notice of the issue of unavailability of diagnostic tests for Hepatitis-E in public sector hospitals of the region.

“The Hepatitis-E is claiming lives of young mothers in the region. The number of such cases is on the rise,” said

YDA Punjab Chairman Dr. Muhammad Haroon while talking to ‘The News’ here on Thursday.

He termed the unavailability of diagnostic tests for Hepatitis-E at the allied hospitals in town as negligence on part of the administrations of the three hospitals. In pregnancy, Hepatitis-E can be most dangerous viral infection that may cause death of both the mother and the baby if not treated in time, he added. The only lifesaving treatment for severe infection in cases of pregnant females is termination of pregnancy after which the mother recovers in most cases. However, premature delivery can cause complications and even prove fatal for the baby, said Dr. Haroon.

He said that taking serious notice of the issue, the concerned authorities should make diagnostic tests for Hepatitis-E available at least at the teaching hospitals. All Hepatitis-E patients do not become critical as only a few cases need monitoring, however, patients.....
