The Hindu : NATIONAL / KARNATAKA : Hepatitis E scare: people advised to drink boiled water

People living on the banks of the Krishna, Doodhganga and Vedganga in the district have been warned against using water from the rivers without first boiling it.
According to a release issued by the district surveillance office here on Thursday, Hepatitis E virus has spread in Ichalkaranji taluk of Kolhapur district in Maharashtra because of contamination of the Panchaganga, which meets the Krishna near Narsinhwadi of Kolhapur district, and the Vedganga and Doodhganga near Kallol barrage in Belgaum district. Hence the Krishna, Doodhganga and Vedganga waters could be contaminated, the release said. A 24-year-old woman from Shidikurbeti village of Gokak taluk in Belgaum district, who visited Ichalkaranji early this month, was admitted to a private hospital here upon her return. She reportedly died from Hepatitis E on June 11.
