Hepatitis A

Das Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) verursacht die infektiöse Gelbsucht (Hepatitis A.)

Was ist Hepatitis A?

GUESTS were told to stay in their rooms following a suspected outbreak of vomiting bug norovirus in a capital hotel.
About 100 guests and staff at the Edinburgh Marriott hotel in Glasgow Road are believed to have contracted the illness last week.

Health officials were called in to deal with the virus after guests showed symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea.

It is almost exactly a year since the chain was blighted by an outbreak of the same virus in its Glasgow hotel.

"We can confirm that last week some of our guests at Edinburgh Marriott were ill with norovirus," said a spokeswoman for the hotel chain. "As soon as we were made aware of the situation, we immediately involved National Health Service and implemented the appropriate protocols; which included reiterating our food safety and hotel hygiene protocols with all our employees, encouraging our guests to exercise vigilance and practise thorough hand-washing, and placing hand sanitisers on every floor."

She added: "Marriott takes hotel hygiene and cleanliness very seriously. The hotel is operating normally, and we have had no further confirmed cases of norovirus since last Saturday."

The illness, known as the winter vomiting bug, is acute, but symptoms usually last only between one and three days.

Food poisoning: The possibility of having a food-related illness is especially high with the holiday season here. Doctors say that it's mainly due to foods that have been left out for long at parties (all those tempting buffets) that cause problems. There are several types of viruses that can come into action even a day later. Research suggests undercooked eggs, salad dressings and even your meat and veggies can be the culprit.

Surprised? "I admit, I was" says Melanie Haiken, Contributor. We don’t think of Hep A as a food-borne bacteria, but in fact contaminated food is proving to be a serious route of transmission for this deadly bacteria. The worst outbreak of Hepatitis A ever reported in the U.S. claiming more than 660 victims including four fatalities came from green onions served at a Chi-Chi’s restaurant in Pennsylvania. Frozen strawberries from Mexico contaminated with Hepatitis A caused a severe outbreak in 1997 as well, affecting thousands of schoolchildren who’d been served the strawberries in school lunches.

Hep. E danger for some patients at risk

http://healthmad.com/conditions-and-diseases/hepatitis-e-danger-for-some-patients-at-risk/

HEPATITIS E VIRUSES

Hepatitis E viruses are single stranded RNA viruses, belonging to the genus hepevirus. This contains hepatitis E viruses infecting humans and other mammals, as well as avian hepatitis E virus. In humans, HEV can cause inflammation of the liver after an incubation period of 2-7 weeks. Disease typically is mild and self-limiting, but mortality up to 20% has been reported among pregnant women, and chronic infection and (severe) hepatitis may occur in immuno-compromised persons. HEV strains infecting mammals are currently classified into genotypes (gt) 1 to 4, and two additional new genotypes have been proposed. Gt 1 and 2 infections are commonly seen as causes of hepatitis in travelers to developing countries, whereas gt 3 and gt 4 were later found as causes of autochthonous infection in industrialized countries. Of these latter two genotypes, especially gt 3 is found to be widespread in commercial pig farms across the world. Underreporting of human HEV infections, and especially those caused by gt 3, is likely. HEV are newly recognized pathogens outside the tropical regions, and the treating physicians may not be aware of these pathogens becoming endemic in industrialized countries. In addition, the currently used diagnostic methods are not optimal. Retrospective studies found HEV infection as possible cause of 6-8% of all non-A-B-C hepatitis cases, and hepatitis E gt 3 is seen in patients without travel history living in regions with endemic HEV in pigs.

Experimental accumulation and persis- tence of norovirus, feline calicivirus and rotavirus in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis)

Experimental accumulation and persis- tence of norovirus, feline calicivirus and rotavirus in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis)
Outbreaks of viral gastrointestinal diseases due to the consumption of contaminated shellfish have been repeatedly reported. Human pathogenic viruses may accumulate in shellfish after faecal contamination of the growing area and thereafter persist for several weeks. Here, blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) were contaminated with noroviruses and rotaviruses for 24 hours in a recirculation artificial seawater system. Noroviruses were found to be enriched 100 to 1000fold within the mussels and persisted therein for at least 4 weeks as assessed by semiquantitative real-time RT-PCR. In contrast, rotaviruses were not efficiently enriched in shellfish and they were only detectable for approximately one week using real-time RT-PCR and cell culture. Feline calicivirus, used as surrogate for norovirus infectivity testing, was also only detectable in shellfish for approximately one week. For rotavirus, the inactivation kinetics in shellfish and contaminated seawater were largely similar. In contrast, norovirus was highly stable in shellfish for at least 4 weeks, but the amount declined in seawater and was no longer detectable therein at 3 weeks after contamination. The results indicate a unique mechanism of norovirus enrichment and persistence in shellfish. For improvement of microbial safety, surveillance may be focused on detection of noroviruses in shellfish samples.

KOCHI: The district administration and the health department have decided to strengthen preventive measures to keep the diseases at bay. The move will involve all departments and private hospitals. This was decided at a meeting held at the Collectorate and chaired by Additional District Magistrate, E. K. Sujatha.

District Medical Officer Dr R. Sudhakaran said that a joint effort by the health department and all related departments is essential in controlling the outbreak of diseases across the district. The majority of contagious diseases is being reported from the eastern region of Ernakulam.

"To control this, we need immediate measures. The department is also keeping vigil against Japan fever which was reported recently in the neighbouring district of Alappuzha," he said.

Trends in U.S. Consumers' Safe Handling and Consumption of Food a...

Although survey results measuring the safety of consumers' food handling and risky food consumption practices have been published for over 20 years, evaluation of trends is impossible because the designs of published studies are not comparable. The Food Safety Surveys used comparable methods to interview U.S. adults by telephone in 1988, 1993, 2001, 2006, and 2010 about food handling (i.e., cross-contamination prevention) and risky consumption practices (eating raw or undercooked foods from animals) and perceived risk from foodborne illness. Sample sizes ranged from 1,620 to 4,547. Responses were analyzed descriptively, and four indices measuring meat, chicken, and egg cross-contamination, fish cross-contamination, risky consumption, and risk perceptions were analyzed using generalized linear models. The extent of media coverage of food safety issues was also examined. We found a substantial improvement in food handling and consumption practices and an increase in perceived risk from foodborne illness between 1993 and 1998. All indices were stable or declined between 1998 and 2006. Between 2006 and 2010, the two safe food handling practice indices increased significantly, but risk perceptions did not change, and safe consumption declined. Women had safer food handling and consumption practices than men. The oldest and youngest respondents and those with the highest education had the least safe food handling behaviors. Changes in safety of practices over the survey years are consistent with the change in the number of media stories about food safety in the periods between surveys. This finding suggests that increased media attention to food safety issues may raise awareness of food safety hazards and increase vigilance in food handling by consumers.

Extreme norovirus risk from Estuary shellfish

'Extreme' norovirus risk from Estuary shellfish

Seafood enthusiasts have been warned to stop gathering shellfish after "extremely high levels of norovirus" have been found in Christchurch.
A health warning has been issued by the Canterbury District Health Board after contaminated shellfish were found around the mouths of the Avon and Heathcote rivers, and at other locations around the Avon-Heathcote Estuary.
Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said people should not collect or eat shellfish from anywhere in the estuary, including along the causeway, until further notice.
Norovirus is found in the faeces and vomit of infected people and Humphrey said individuals could be infected through direct contact with a sick person, by eating contaminated food or water, or by touching surfaces and objects contaminated with the virus.
"Recent tests have confirmed that shellfish have become contaminated with very high levels of norovirus," he said.
"This is because of the ongoing direct discharge of sewage into the Avon and Heathcote rivers, as well as the direct discharge into the Estuary as a result of the February and June earthquakes."
Signs had been placed in infected areas and Humphrey said ignoring the warnings could have life-threatening consequences.
Symptoms often begin suddenly and include vomiting, diarrhoea and stomachaches. People may also have a fever, chills, headache and muscle aches. The illness is usually brief, but symptoms could persist for several days and become life-threatening.
"We would also like to remind people that contact with river and sea water in and around Christchurch City should be avoided.
The only areas where water quality has been found to be acceptable are Pegasus Bay beaches north of the Waimakariri River, the lower Waimakariri River, Spencerville Beach and Taylors Mistake south including Lyttelton Harbour," Humphrey said.
However, contact with water in these areas should be avoided following heavy rainfall for up to 48 hours.
The contaminated sites would continue to be monitored and the public would be informed when it was safe to gather shellfish again, he said.

Warning About United States Floods and Hepatitis A | Healthmad

The floods arising from hurricane Irene hitting North Carolina and New York states has led United States President, Barack Obama to declare a state of emergency. Though the focus of the emergency is on actual rising waters and flooding there is also the danger of the spread of various diseases, such as Hepatitis A. For those who think they’re infected the CDC suggests a solution.

The FSMA represents an opportunity to build a system that can prevent many outbreaks of foodborne illness and reduce the public health impact of those that do occur. We expect to better meet high consumer expectations and enhance the food system's economic viability. We will be working with stakeholders, with Congress, and with the administration to ensure that the FDA has the necessary resources to implement this landmark legislation.
